Li Dong Yuan’s Theory of Yin Fire fits the clinical scenarios of modern, Western, chronic diseases like a glove. Everything from autoimmune diseases and cancer to chronic allergies all often involve Yin Fire scenarios. This is not dusty, 700-800 year-old theory. This is the real clinical deal. Now.

Our modern, Western patient base has a lot in common with the patients seen during Li Dong-yuan’s time of the Jin-Yuan dynasties. This time marked an increasing move toward city-living, and thus closer living quarters (less agrarian for many) and increased consumption of richer, warmer foods and more sedentary lifestyle especially amongst bureaucrats. Sound familiar? This is, in part, why Li began to shift toward thinking about internally engendered diseases, especially heat vis a vis an inhibited Qi mechanism- the central Qi. Li postulated that due to emotional (affect) damage as well as dietary indiscretions, the Spleen/Stomach fails upbear (the clear) and downbear (turbid), respectively. This inhibition of the Qi mechanism sets into motion a cascade of pathophysiological changes resulting in the flaring of Lifegate/Ministerial Fire that he documented and that resulted in many formulas still used today, not the least of which is Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang.

This class is ideal for all CM physicians treating chronic diseases and helps make quick sense of complicated multi-pattern presentations.
